Drutopia - Building a Drupal Distribution for the Grassroots, accessible as Software as a Service
Drutopia is at once an ethos of Drupal development and a fresh take on Drupal distributions for users to build upon, all based in a governance model that gives users a large role in the direction of the project.
The Platform Cooperativism Movement is bridging the connection between cooperatively owned businesses and the software platforms we use. Most platforms, like Uber and Amazon are currently owned by corporations. A platform for communications can be a powerful thing when owned by the stakeholders.
Drutopia is an initiative within the Drupal project, based in social justice values and focused on building collectively owned online tools with free software. Current focuses include two Drupal distributions aimed at grassroots groups and also offered as software as a service, ensuring that the latest technology is accessible to low-resourced communities.
We will discuss the progress of the Platform Cooperativism Movement, the Drutopia project, and how to get involved with several initiatives based on Free Software that are in progress. The urgency to own our own tools and means of production has never been greater. To collectively own the infrastructures we rely on for everything from food to communications we must forge the networks now.
